Neuromas and Neuritis

Looking for a doctor to help with your neuromas and neuritis foot condition in or around San Francisco, the Bay Area, or Sacramento? Novato Foot and Ankle Center can diagnose and treat your neuromas and neuritis condition.

Nerve pain within the foot and ankle can be caused by a myriad of conditions. Symptoms that are associated with nerve pathology may include burning, tingling, numbness or sharp electric type pain. General inflammation of a nerve is called neuritis and may cause continued or progressive nerve symptoms and pain.

A neuroma is a thickening of the nerve sheath that causes pain and symptoms due to compression as it courses between the metatarsal bones. This can cause sharp, electric type pain along the foot, often radiating into the toes.

Tarsal tunnel is irritation of a nerve as it courses along the inside of the ankle. It can be caused by a structural entrapment of the nerve, a space occupying lesion or increased tension on the nerve due to a positional deformity of the foot. Nerve studies may be necessary to aid in diagnosis of specific pathology.

Conservative treatment options for nerve symptoms may include padding to offload and redistribute pressure, corticosteroid injections, or custom orthotics to correct foot structure. If the nerve becomes extensively symptomatic, sclerosis injections can denature the nerve and prevent associated pain. If the condition cannot be addressed with conservative measures, surgical intervention may be considered. This may require decompression of the nerve or removal of the affected nerve. It is important to contact your foot and ankle specialist for the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
