A hammertoe is a bending contracture at the level of the joints of the lesser toes. This is often a gradual change that occurs over time due to structural imbalances of the foot. This deformity often causes excessive pressure on the top or the bottom of the toe, which may lead to calluses or even open sores if left untreated. The pain is often worse inside shoe gear due to pressure and friction on the prominences.

Conservative treatment includes special types of padding to decrease pressure to the prominent areas. Corns and calluses associated with the hammertoes should be regularly trimmed by the foot and ankle specialist to prevent worsening pain or complications. Often, the hammertoe deformity can be managed with conservative treatment while it remains flexible. However, as the condition progresses, the toe may become more rigid which may require surgical treatment to correct the underlying deformity.
