Athlete’s foot is a common skin infection caused by fungus of the foot. This condition can cause dry scaling skin that may cause itching or burning sensations. The fungal infection can be contracted from affected surfaces or moist environments such as public showers or locker rooms. Many different skin conditions can present in a similar way but require different treatment, so a skin biopsy may be required to determine the correct diagnosis through special testing.

Once correctly diagnosed by your foot and ankle specialist, conservative treatment for athlete’s foot begins with antifungal topical medication. This is typically used for several weeks. During treatment, it is important to prevent contact with high risk environments, monitor between the toes, avoid walking barefoot, and changing socks regularly to keep your feet dry. It is also helpful to spray the inside of your shoes with antifungal spray and switch shoe gear every day to allow each pair to adequately dry between use.
