Bone spurs are often a result of arthritic changes within the foot or ankle. As arthritis progresses, it often decreases the joint space and leads to limited motion. With the decrease in motion and jamming of the joint, bony spurs or protrusions may develop around the joint spaces. These spurs can become painful especially in shoe gear with increased pressure to the areas.

If the symptoms are not resolved with conservative treatment, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the bone spur and address the causative factor.
