Fungal toenails, also called onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that changes the morphology and appearance of then nails. It classically causes the nails to become thickened with yellow discoloration. With these changes, it often becomes difficult to trim the nails using nail clippers due to the increased thickness. The nails may become painful in shoe gear due to increased pressure.
Fungus can easily be contracted from infected items or surfaces, especially moist environments such as locker rooms or public showers. Fungal toenails have a classic appearance, however different conditions can cause a similar appearance of the nail. To confirm the diagnosis, a sample of the nail may be sent to a lab for fungal testing.
Treatment for fungal toenails includes topical medication, laser treatment or oral medication. The treatment options have varying rates of efficacy and each individual responds differently to the treatments. The foot and ankle specialist can diagnose the condition and determine the most effective treatment option.
